Types of wedding ceremonies in Italy

How to tell the difference between a legally-binding and civil ceremony? What about symbolic and religious…? Well, some of these are just different expressions for the same thing. Others are indeed very different types of wedding ceremonies. The good thing is: regardless of what kind of wedding ceremony you will choose, our wedding packages for Italy got you covered. Below is a short overview. For more detailed info about legal and symbolic weddings, send us an enquiry.

Legal

Legally-binding ceremonies are Civil ceremonies where the marriage is officially registered in Italy and is valid worldwide (if you follow the right steps!). In Italy both civil and catholic ceremonies are always legally binding and follow Italian marriage regulations, while other religious ceremonies (e.g. Protestant, Jewish, Hindu…) and symbolic ceremonies are non-legally binding.

Civil

A civil ceremony in Italy is the only type of marriage ceremony recognised as legally-binding before Italian law. It must be performed in a licensed venue or town hall and must be conducted in Italian by the local mayor (don’t worry, we will provide you an English interpreter!) with two mandatory witnesses over 18. Legal paperwork must be issued. It usually lasts around 20 minutes.

Religious

A Catholic ceremony performed in a church by a priest can be legally-binding if it contains the Civil portion in the same ceremony. At least one of the two partners has to be Catholic and both religious and civil documents must be issued. An English-speaking priest can be requested and readings are most of the times at the couple’s choice. It usually lasts about 45 minutes.

Symbolic

Avoid the hassle of dealing with annoying paperwork required for a legally-binding marriage in Italy and opt for a symbolic ceremony for your destination wedding. This way, you can legally marry at home and then have your intimate wedding abroad anywhere Italy. Another bonus is you won’t be restricted to only licensed venues and you can personalise the ceremony to your heart’s content!

…still not sure?

No worries! As part of our wedding package for Italy, your dedicated planner will guide you in choosing the right ceremony to fit your needs.

Weather… when to get married in Italy

We all have in our mind pictures of Italian landscapes blessed with sunshine, a cool breeze and bright vibrant colors. While this might be the case often times, Italy is actually pretty diverse in terms of climate and you can easily have your small wedding on the highest mountain of the Alps and then go to the warmth of the coastline in just 2 hours for you honeymoon!

If you were thinking of a destination wedding in Italy outdoors, we suggest opting for the spring months – from the end of March until the beginning of June – to really admire the beauty of Italian nature, when flowers are in full bloom and the greenery is flourishing. Rain is just around the corner, yes, so set some budget aside for a marquee or take into consideration an indoors option as plan B.

From the middle of June to the end of August cities in Italy are on fire, from the North to the South of the country. Why not choose a beach ceremony in Italy this time of year ? Summer is glorious in Portofino, on the Amalfi Coast, in Apulia or in Siciliy… the beauty of warm summer nights is truly something to experience there.

But we are all for the unexpected and dramatic landscapes (and temperatures!) too! To have falling leaves and orange tones as backdrop for your destination wedding in Italy, you can choose the hills of Piedmont or Tuscany during fall. Fancy some snow and freezing cold? Then the Alps and the South Tyrol region are some of the most breathtaking mountainous regions you would find in Europe, and having your micro wedding in Italy there would be best between December and February.

How to plan a destination wedding in Italy

Planning a destination wedding from the other side of the world can be a stressful experience, we know that. Especially if guests are involved and you cannot have a “hands-on” approach with things like picking the venue and suppliers.

That’s why hiring a local wedding planner could be a total game changer! The process of enquiring with us and getting in contact with your dedicated planner is simple: just fill in our enquiry form. Armed with the details of your upcoming celebration, we’ll get back to you with a quote for your personalized wedding package, which you can still edit or add to at any time.

We also highly recommend scheduling a quick consultation call with your local wedding Italian planner. It’s free and it’ the best way for her to get to know you and how you envisage getting married in Italy. Ask her any questions you may have and just get to know each other.

Having found your perfect wedding package and falling in love with a specific venue, now you’re ready to book! Just sign our booking agreement, pay your deposit according to the payment plan, and relish in the anticipation of your upcoming special day!

The number of installments applicable to your case will depend on how far in advance you book with us.

As for the planning, we will find the vendors who best fit your preferred style: celebrant, flowers, music, hair & makeup and décor will be just as you envision them. By sending us inspirational pictures and accurate descriptions of your preferences, everything will feel like it’s been tailored just for you.

In approaching the big day, you’ll be pleased to know that we have sorted out everything so just hop on a plane and travel to Italy with your loved ones!

We’ll send you a detailed timeline of the day approximately one month before to illustrate how it will flow and to provide you with all the contact details of your vendors we’ve booked as part of your package. Plus, you’ll most likely have booked on-the-day coordination (highly suggested when having more than guests with you) so that you’ll have extra peace of mind.

Now, relaxing and enjoying the most romantic day of your life will be your only duties!
